Deck of gunboat Hunchback on James River. Originally a New York City ferryboat, the Hunchback was purchased by the navy in 1861 and armed with two guns. Because of its shallow draft, the gunboat was continuously used throughout the Civil War. This photograph was made while the gunboat was patrolling the James River, Between May 5, 1864-February 23, 1865.
