General Wade Hampton  ·  General Wade Hampton, 1754-1835. Born in Halifax County, Virginia, 1754. Died in Columbia, SC, 1835. The son of Anthony Hampton and his wife, Anne Preston Hampton, both born in Virginia. In July 1776, Anthony Hampton, his wife, one son, several grandchildren and his household servants were massacred by Cherokee Indians near South Tyger River, SC, to which place the family had migrated in 1774. This portrait of Wade Hampton is a photographic reproduction of a cameo portrait worn as a watch charm by himself. Reproduction of this cameo portrait is authorized and permitted by Curtis Bynum, Asheville, NC, present owner of other cameo. Presented to the War Department of the United States by Susan Dixon of Columbia, SC. Curtis Bynum and Miss Susan Dixon are lineal descendants of Wade Hampton's sister Margaret (Mrs. Gray Bynum) of NC.
