The small hill where the monument in memory of Lieutenant-General Gordon has been erected indicated the former level. Wellington assisted at the first part of the battle under the elm shown on this photography at the bifurcation of the Chemin crueux and the route de Charliroi. the universal reputation of the Chemin creux is owing to the imagination of Victor Hugo.
