The Great Wall of China began under the Qin dynasty. During this time over 300,000 people worked for 10 years to build a defense against Northern invaders. The wall had small additional over the years, until it again became a large project under the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644. Currently several portions of the wall have been restored. Most of them are near the capitol city of Beijing. A majority of the 1700 mile wall outside the Beijing area is in very large disrepair.
