African Sculpture
Another major form of Sub-Saharan African
Art was sculptures. Carol Strickland
(1992) states that “African carvers consistently rejected real-life
appearances in favor of vertical forms, tubular shapes, and stretched out body
parts derived from the cylindrical from of trees." Sculptures often took on practical forms such as pot holders, spoons as
well as other useable objects. Sculptures
were not large in size so they could be easily moved from one location to
another.
